From the beginning, we’ve always shared a love for playing music. We met and started dating when I (Jill) came on as the tour manager for Nick and the gang’s band, Still Time. And although we never played music together in the early days, after we got married, we began playing and singing in our living room occasionally on weeknights.
The idea for The Average Folk came one afternoon, when we were looking over our budget and realized we didn’t have much extra money to spend on dates. We started thinking, "how could we get creative," and then it dawned on us—we could play gigs, make a little money, and maybe get dinner/drinks included too. To us, it was a little stroke of genius.

To give a nod to the process, we originally called our newly founded project, Date Night. But a few years in, we realized it needed something different and we started calling ourselves The Average Folk. It's been a pretty good fit since.
So there you have it. The simple story is, we’re a couple who loves music, loves to keep it thrifty, and loves to have some fun playing tunes for people on California's Central Coast and beyond. We cover some of the greats like The Band, Grateful Dead, Gillian Welch, The Rolling Stones, among others. And we toss in a number of our original tunes as well.
